Hi, my name is Karlena Barron. I’m a personal trainer, type 2 diabetes health coach, and author of the highly-acclaimed Type 2 Diabetes Cookbook Formula.
I began my career at Duke University as a coaching assistant and strength and conditioning intern for some of best athletes in the world.
After my success at Duke, I developed fitness boot camps where I help countless people achieve their health and fitness goals.
In 1992, my mother was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and suffered awful complications including renal failure and arteriosclerosis. Take a look at the damage type 2 diabetes caused to my mother’s fingers and right foot:
As you can see in the photos, her fingers and foot are practically black. The change in dark color indicates no circulation.
In an effort for her not get an infection and to have some quality of life, her doctor and his medical staff suggested an above- the- knee amputation for her badly damaged right leg and foot.
I asked my mother if she had one piece of advice to give all of you currently living with type 2 diabetes, she said this: “Take care of yourself before you are faced with problems you cannot correct. You do not want your loved ones taking care of you because of the poor health decisions you made in your life”.
